Among the Beautiful Living Dead – the movie

posted on 16 May 2013 at 11:43 pm

If I had to nominate which of my short stories has generated the most questions from fans, it’d have to be “Entre les Beaux Morts en Vie” (“Among the Beautiful Living Dead”), which was first published in Dreaming Down-Under way back in 1999 and concerns the rite of passage of a young man as he transitions from a mortal to an immortal in a science fictional world: i.e. no vampires.

The question I’m usually asked is, “When are you writing the novel?” My usual answer is “One day”, but now I can say “One day, and did you know someone’s making it into a movie?”

Stephanie Westwood is a producer from Melbourne. She and director Max Pollard have adapted the story into a short screenplay, called “Retrospect”. It’s well into pre-production and they’re doing casting and location lockdowns as we speak. They’re crowdfunding some aspects of the production, and you can help out if you’d like to here. Alas, there’s no reward to actually BE in the movie, otherwise I totally would’ve grabbed that by now!

ETA later this year. I’ll keep you updated on the movie’s progress.

(This isn’t, btw, the only adaptation in the works. There’s a feature adaptation of “Passing the Bone“, plus the TV series of The Crooked Letter, both chugging away nicely in the background. I’ve had interest in the Resurrected Man TV series too, and I’ll be working on a Twinmaker script later this year. Life is cool.)

Best of luck with this and future adaptations! If any of them happen to be casting in the States, let me know. 😉
